A Global Logistics Unboxes Sustainability by Loading Green Initiatives in its Operations

A global leader in logistics, known for its warehousing and supply chain expertise, is implementing green initiatives to reduce the impact of its operations on the environment. To achieve its goal of being an environmentally responsible company, it is focusing on reducing Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, effective waste management and minimising waste generation.

These sustainability initiatives have borne significant results in recent years. Its carbon footprint decreased significantly, from 61.26 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent per million USD in revenue in 2019 to 35.01 metric tons by 2023. This reduction underscores the company’s dedication to sustainability, and aligns with its broader strategy of promoting revenue growth through responsible business practices.

One of the firm’s key strategies for reducing GHG emissions is the implementation of energy-efficient lighting. By the end of 2023, 78% of its leased and owned facilities had adopted light-emitting diode lighting, demonstrating the firm’s commitment to integrate sustainability into its daily operations.

In addition to energy efficiency, the company has made significant progress in renewable energy adoption. In 2023, 13.46% of its global electricity consumption came from renewable sources. The logistics major achieved resounding success in Spain, all the company-operated facilities there are now powered entirely by renewable energy. This was made possible through on-site solar panels and renewable energy supplied by the grid.

The company’s waste diversion programs have also achieved remarkable success on a global scale. In 2023, the logistics firm diverted 81.9% of the waste generated from its operations, reflecting its commitment to reduce environmental impact by adopting responsible waste-management practices.

To fast track sustainability, the company has partnered with a telecommunications client to eliminate single-use pallet plastics. This initiative involved replacing single-use shrink wrap with reusable pallet collars made from recyclable materials, resulting in a 94% reduction in the client’s plastic consumption—from 50.7 metric tons in 2021 to just 2.9 metric tons by 2023. This solution underscores the logistics firm’s innovative approach to sustainability and its ability to drive impactful change even in the operations of clients.

The company's sustainability efforts reflect a forward-thinking approach to business, driving both operational efficiency and environmental responsibility. By continually innovating and collaborating with clients, it is shaping a future where growth and sustainability go hand in hand.
