ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) considerations are rapidly becoming the cornerstone of the modern business landscape, both in India and across the globe. A premier name in the Indian healthcare sector has emerged as a frontrunner by deeply embedding environmental consciousness into its clinical operations. By moving beyond traditional patient care, the group has successfully integrated sustainability into the very fabric of its infrastructure.
The company has made significant strides in energy conservation through its flagship initiative, Project Virya. This program has achieved a 20% reduction in energy consumption and carbon footprint across 18 of its largest medical facilities in India. The scale of these savings is remarkable, equivalent to the annual energy consumption of over 7,70,667 households. Furthermore, the group now sources 26% of its grid electricity from renewable energy, thereby avoiding 81,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions. In a pioneering move for the Indian healthcare industry, the organization has also released its Scope 3 inventory, covering three critical emission categories.
Waste and water management have seen equally impactful transformations in FY 2024-25:
- Water Stewardship: The group recycled 525,862 KL (kilolitre) of water and treated over 1.8 million KL of water through primary, secondary, and tertiary processes before discharge.
- Waste Circularity: Approximately 3,057 MT (Metric tonnes) of waste was successfully recycled.
- Biomedical Progress: There was a substantial reduction of 1,284 MT in biomedical waste compared to the previous fiscal year.
- Plastic Reduction: The company replaced 1.4 lakh HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) bags with eco-friendly jute alternatives.
Beyond its own walls, the company has extended its ESG rigor to its partners. It has ensured that 100% of its suppliers are assessed under the Apollo Supplier Code of Conduct, ensuring a responsible and ethical supply chain.
These tangible achievements in resource efficiency and emission control underscore a firm commitment to a healthier planet alongside a healthier population.
