The aviation sector is a major contributor to climate change – thanks to the fossil fuel that airplanes burn. The worst part is that the apart from the CO2 emissions, the burning of fuel causes non-CO2 warming due to the vapour trails and nitrogen oxides produced as a result of high-altitude flying zone of airplanes. In case of aircraft, the non-CO2 effect is twice that of the CO2 effect. Now, a British airline has taken the lead in starting an era of green aviation.
To put the ESG principles in practice, the airline is implementing various measures to reduce emissions to reduce the environmental impact of its operations. The British airline has been promoting sustainability for the past 15 years by managing its environmental impact – it has one of the skies’ youngest and most fuel-efficient fleet.
In November 2023, this British travel and airline company made history with the world’s first transatlantic (London-New York) flight using 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel.
Several benefits are achieved through this step, which are highlighted in its May 2024 report:
● A complete lifecycle analysis shows a reduction of 95 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) or 64% less emissions than a standard flight from London to New York. In general, this stands for taking 54 cars off the road for a year or the energy consumed by 33 homes in the United Kingdom.
● The use of sustainable aviation fuel also helped with a 40% decrease in non-CO2 particulate emissions.
● The energy density of sustainable aviation fuel is 1% higher than that of its fossil fuel counterpart.
● Steps such as direct routing and reduced taxi time were taken to ensure operational efficiency. This led to a saving of 2.2 tonnes of jet fuel or equal to only 4% of the total fuel burnt. If these initiatives were imposed on every flight of the airline major for a year, then 24 Olympic-sized swimming pools could be filled through the saved fuel.
This demonstrated that Sustainable Aviation Fuel is a safe replacement for fossil-derived jet fuel, compatible with current engines, airframes, and fuel infrastructure, and the most viable solution for reducing carbon emissions in long-haul aviation.
By embracing innovative technologies and sustainable practices, the airline is steadfast in its commitment to decarbonization, ensuring that it connects the world with due respect to Mother Earth, and something green for the future generations.
