A US-based company has invented a technology that eliminates all the greenhouse gas emissions of traditional smelting and emits pure oxygen as a byproduct; this is the first major smelting breakthrough in 100 years.
According to an International Energy Agency (IEA) report (September 2022), refining and smelting account for over 90% of direct CO2 emissions associated with aluminium production. Aluminium industry was responsible for around 3% of global direct industrial CO2 emissions in 2021.
The company partnered with the world`s second-largest metals and mining corporation in 2018 for this project. It is supported by multiple partners and the aluminium produced by its research division is being used by some of the biggest names in the industry.
