Corporations are helping the aviation sector become more sustainable by making bulk purchases of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) not linked to individual flights. The “book and claim” system has been adopted by multiple corporations, international airlines, and fuel producers.
SAF is a low-carbon biofuel that is mixed with jet fuel to power aircraft. This renewable fuel is typically produced from waste like used cooking oil, paper, food scraps, textiles, waste wood, crop waste, and fast-growing plants & algae.
Over 2% of global energy-related CO2 emissions came from the aviation sector in 2021. The aviation sector is looking at multiple solutions to cut their emissions including low-carbon fuels like SAF.
SAF bought under this system is delivered to partner airlines while other variations of this model allow airline selection at the customer`s end. Companies pay nearly 3 to 5 times more than conventional jet fuel for SAF but achieve a reduction in their carbon footprint backed by relevant reporting and documentation from fuel producers.
