Proactive leadership of a European food & beverage company identified 16m+ Euros in energy savings.Since 2010,it has achieved a 17% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, with a 30% reduction goal by 2023.
The company worked with an external partner to achieve its environmental objectives using digitisation and innovation using a three-step approach to energy and resource management.
First, they centralised their procurement strategy by using flexible procurement tools for markets where the company is present. The company reported in 2021,strategic energy buying resulted in 7.8 million Euros of savings against the 2020 energy budget. Commodity buying saw savings of 6.5 million Euros compared to the 2020 budget.It also identified 300 thousand Euros of saving opportunities in existing utility costs.
The second step was conducting efficiency and carbon reduction workshops for its team that helped them identify 1.4 million Euros in energy savings and 8,410t in carbon saving opportunities. The company plans to expand this learning strategy to cover self-generation and waste reduction measures.
Step three was to identify renewable energy providers to reduce scope 2 emissions in viable markets.Scope 2 emissions are a result of a company`s activities but originate outside it.
The company has demonstrated how integrating energy and sustainability initiatives into an overall climate action strategy can drive cost reduction, energy efficiency, and a resilient future.
