A British hospitality company implemented sustainability best practices in its 6000 hotels across 100 countries, in 2015. The company worked with a partner to develop an online platform that allows its hotels to measure and manage their environmental impact.
It is difficult to measure, monitor, and manage ESG(Environmental Social Governance) performance for businesses that rely on the franchise model. The partners often lack the necessary skills to implement and access ESG performance.
The hotelier got around this hurdle by developing an innovative online sustainability system with a technology partner. The system gives all hotels, within its portfolio, the tools to measure and manage their impact on the environment.
The partners can now choose from over 200 green solutions that are designed to help them reduce their energy, water, and waste. The system works by prioritising sustainable purchasing, the purchase of energy-efficient products, and sustainable site management.
The data collected by the company assists them in making accurate data-driven decisions to improve their ESG performance. The system certifies the partners in four levels. Level 3 is awarded for reducing energy use by up to 25%.
The company accommodated UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) delegates in two of its hotels in Glasgow, which are on their way to net-zero emissions and became a sustainability benchmark for the hotel industry.
