The company operates in the airport development, operations, maintenance, and integrated security solutions space. It also has footprints in sectors like energy and transportation.
In FY23, the company reduced its reliance on the non-renewable sources by 21% as compared to FY22. During the same period, the energy consumption from renewable sources increased by 37%. The airport infrastructure company used renewable sources to meet the entire energy requirements of two of its airports.
One of the key energy-efficient practices adopted was natural light optimization at the airport terminals. The airport operator also managed to achieve carbon neutrality for its southern airport and signed an off-site renewable energy power purchase agreement for its northern airport. These measures helped in reducing Scope 1 emissions to 4389.21 metric tons of carbon dioxide in FY23 from 6490.07 metric tons of carbon dioxide in FY22. On the other hand, the Scope 2 emissions decreased to 54709.77 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide in FY23 from 57768.64 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide in FY22. Emissions (Scope 1 + 2) generated, for each rupee of turnover, came down to 10.89 metric tons per crore in FY23 from 13.96 metric tons per crore in FY22.
Other sustainability measures included a biodiesel refuelling outlet and an electric vehicle charging station at its southern airport in FY23. At its northern airport, the company deployed 62 electric vehicles, which reduced 1,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in FY23.
The green practices of the Indian airport operator are to be seen as part of the overall initiatives taken by the aviation industry to attain net-zero carbon emissions. The energy transition measures, coupled by the energy-efficient steps taken by the airport infrastructure company showcases its commitment for a socially responsible business model, with good governance at its core.
