An Indian Energy Major is Energising its Balance Sheet & Environment by Energy Conservation

An Indian energy utility is reaping rich yield from its electrical and heat energy-saving initiatives. The savings on account of these initiatives increased to Rs 58.45 crore in FY23 from Rs 43.01 crore in FY22. In FY23, the company saved 139.61 MU (million units) of electricity, resulting in a monetary saving of Rs 48.94 crore. In saved heat energy equivalent to 23,022 MT of coal, which led to a cost saving of Rs 9.51 crore.

The energy conservation project includes improvements in HP/IP (high and intermediate pressure) cylinder efficiency, condenser jet cleaning, and boiler modifications. It also includes installation of VFDs (variable frequency drives) and solar PV systems, and replacement of less energy efficient BFP (boiler feed pump) cartridges. All these measures increased the energy savings by 2.48% on a year-on-year basis.

The company is also tapping new areas to increase the income from renewable energy sources. In FY23, the revenue from the non-fossil fuel segment stood at 11% of its total revenue. The company received contracts for the deployment of FGD (flue-gas desulfurization), PM (particulate matter) control, and De-NOX (Denitrification) technologies of more than Rs 30,000 crore.

The company invested Rs 350 crore on the green demonstration projects. This includes investment on usage of green hydrogen and alternate chemicals. For these clean technologies, contracts worth Rs 163 crores were received.

The energy giant took some major steps to contribute for a greener society by reducing energy consumption in its operations, and secured green contracts that gave it revenue and an opportunity to reduce carbon footprints.
