Indian Tyre Manufacturer’s Untiring Efforts Helps It Align Operations with Sustainability

An Indian tyre manufacturing company is aligning its operations with the sustainability goal. The company is lubricating its management practices with the ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principles for a smooth drive towards its goal of sustainability.

The company has implemented measures to lower emissions and prioritise sustainable manufacturing to reduce the impact of its business on the environment.

In FY 2023-2024, the tyre maker – a significant player in the EV (Electric Vehicle) segment - consumed 18,46,209 Gigajoules of energy from renewable sources, which was 50.98% of its overall energy needs across its manufacturing facilities.

The tubes and flaps manufacturer saved 83,726 Gigajoules of energy through various initiatives, which eventually helped it reduce emissions by 9,775 metric tons in FY 2023-2024.

Steps taken by the company to conserve power across different units include:

• Installation of more energy-efficient LED (Light Emitting Diode) lamps at one of its units. This step saved 122 kilowatt-hours of energy every day in FY24. Also, the use of Brushless Direct Current (BLDC) fans saved 188 kilowatt-hours of power daily in FY24.

• In FY 2023–2024, at another plant, the installation of variable-frequency drives for the mixing blower saved 105 kilowatt-hours daily. The same technology saved 348 kilowatt-hours per day in FY24 for dust collectors. Additionally, reducing the utilization of calorifier steam saved 15 metric tons of steam each day in FY 24.

• To manage a hot water pump and cooling tower at one of its facility, Internet of Things (IoT) solutions were started. This step resulted in power saving of 250 kilowatt-hours on a day-to-day basis in FY24. Additionally, the usage of more efficient motors saved 100 kilowatt-hours of energy per day in FY24.

• The deployment of a backpressure steam turbine at another site led to a daily energy saving of 883 kilowatt-hours in FY 2023-2024. Changes in the steam headers in the curing segment saved 866 metric tons of steam daily in FY24.

All these steps also had a positive impact on the company’s financials, saving ₹1.30 crore in FY24. This highlights the fact how, by incorporating ESG principles, the Indian automotive tyre major has struck a perfect balance between sustainability and potential profitability.
