A global Fortune 500 plastic packaging manufacturer won a prestigious sustainability award for innovative packaging solution that recycles single-use plastic bottles and caps. (October 26, 2022).
Although the prevalence of recycling symbols and messaging creates an optimistic impression, of the 7 billion tons of plastic waste generated globally, between 1950-2017, less than 10 per cent has been recycled (unep.org).
The 2022 Ocean Conservancy report on International Coastal Cleanup recorded plastic bottle caps as the fifth most collected waste item worldwide (September 2022). These caps pose a serious environmental challenge as they can be ingested by wildlife and break into microplastics.
The company has helped its clients with other sustainable packaging solutions, including 100% post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic bottles, sugarcane bio-resin packaging tubes instead of plastic tubes, and recyclable cups instead of plastic-lined paper cups. One of the largest soft drink manufacturers in the world has adopted its sustainable design for its European Union operations.
